Macdonald, Michele
Artist Statement
Nature has this interplay of form, texture, colour and function, and for me pottery is an invitation to this very same endless reimagining of that interplay. I use this inspiration to find combinations that will evoke a memory or of the familiar in the natural world.

Artist Statement
Perhaps owing to my maternal Greek ancestry, I have always been drawn to the classic shapes of Ancient Greek and Minoan pottery. Much of my work explores variations of these forms. I am intrigued by the aesthetically pleasing and sensuous curves that belie the utility and functionality of so many of these pots. More recently I have begun using “wild clay” bringing my artistic practice full circle by creating works from the same clay I played with as a child, dug from the Manitoba farm where I grew up.
Moldovan, Maria
Artist Statement
Maria is a full time visual artist living in Arnprior, Ontario. Her main artistic medium is ceramics and she mostly creates sculptural works but has small series of functional wares. She is also teaching ceramics at the Ottawa School of Art.
She holds a BFA in ceramics from the University of Visual Arts and Design, Cluj Napoca, Romania.
For Maria, ceramic art is the perfect medium to explore colors and sculptural forms at the same time.
She mostly works with hand building techniques. Finishing the ceramic surface in a rich manner with different textures, engravings, color and drawings is a very important part of her works.
Maria's artwork is immersed in a dreamlike combination of real and imaginary elements. She often combines body parts, landscape, animal figures, and architectural details which in real life would never show up together. Finding the connection points and links between these dimensions is thought-provoking.
She moved to Canada in 2013 with her family. Leaving a well known space and searching for anchor points in a new space is a challenging process. This search has been a driving force in her creative work in the past few years. Exploring a new world, new dimensions can be inspiring and the process of searching leads us in unknown outer and inside spaces as well.
